(E)ven lions must sometimes be afraid.—The Champion of Merrimack County, P. 96This is a welcome story from an author who was previously unfamiliar to me, Roger Wolcott Drury.I dont know very much about the authors writing influences, but I could most definitely sense some apparent derivation from the works of Beverly Cleary and Dick King-Smith. O Crispin (the mouses name in The Champion of Merrimack County) is possessed of some striking parallels to Ralph S. Mouse from the Mouse and the Motorcycle books, but it was the resemblance to Dick King-Smiths world of merry zaniness to which this Roger W.

Drury book was most reminiscent of all.The story has some nice spots of humor, and fans of Dick King-Smith will most likely be pleased to have found another author who writes in the same style that has brought us books such as Babe: The Gallant Pig, A Mouse Called Wolf, Three Terrible Trins, and Waterhorse: Legend of the Deep.
